It was the 80s and we didn’t know how horrible our video games were. But it was all we had.
It was a time of great merchandising. Any successful movie or toy was also a video game, a Saturday morning cartoon, and a breakfast cereal.
Ghostbusters was a great idea for a video game and they gave it everything they had. It was confusing and frustrating.
Perfect fodder for a beat down.
But first: warmarama
The thing:
In video gameplay, there’s a city grid- when a building flashes, you drive the Ecto-1 to that spot. So YHC identified six areas on the streets, each represented by a side of the die we’d be rolling.
Each guy would take turns rolling the die and then we would go to the building and do the exercise.
In gameplay, if you pass a ghost on the road, you could suck it up using a ghost vacuum (if you remember to purchase one). If not, the PKE of the city increases.
In our beatdown, any car passing on the road would result in eight mountain climber Merkens, unless we purchased a ghost vacuum for five man makers (then we’d just do 4).
Confused yet? Excellent.
The six stations were:
40 curls
30 Wheezy Jeffersons
20 Absolutions
20 Alpine mountain climbers
20 Peter Parker Peters
20 thrusters
Correctly answered trivia at each station could cut the reps in half.
When we had about 10 minutes left, we moved to the stage area and did a Burpee every time a car passed.
The final part-
Sub-creatures! Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Volguus Zildrohar, the Traveller has come. Choose and perish.
Choose! Choose the form of the Destructor!
(This is when the PAX, just by thinking of something, choose which exercise will destroy us for the last 5 minutes)
The choice is made!”
The Traveller has come!”
Enron could be heard mumbling
“I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something that I loved from my childhood. Something that would never ever possibly destroy us.”
And so it was that the Princess Tea Party would come to destroy us.
From the Exicon:
PAX grab a partner and form two rows with partners facing each other in plank position. Partners do Pattycake Merkins for set number of reps, followed by a Partner People’s Chair (Back to back wall sit) for set time. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
I don’t know if it’s just the Donkey Kong Jr cereal talking, but there’s something really gratifying about leading a workout where nobody knows what the hell is going on.
What a great morning.
