YHC arrived to an empty parking lot at the Stage. Roxbury was somewhere on foot headed there, so a quick lap on the barbie sounded good. Mid-way, AB was observed parking excessively close to YHC’s car. Clearly he was expecting a packed house or lots of carpoolers.
Eventually, Popeye, Enron, Valve, and Dox arrived. That is not to say that we have a Pax named Eventually. Valve and Dox, collectively, were clearly in charge of the flags. They even purposefully timed their late arrival together to co-plant the flags. And then for some reason, they planted the flags near the stage. You miss one Monday, then apparently everything changes.
Standard warmarama ensued with the chatter at 11.
Coupons were needed, and at the Depot of Requirement were now a pair of Hey Dudes in addition. AB noted that those were the footwear equivalent of Creed. Or was it Nickleback? Maybe Collective Sole.
The Thang:
At a recent AB beatdown, our task was to identify a song, and the most troubling moment of that beatdown was Valve emphatically declaring that “I believe in a thing called love” was “not the original”. After too much time contemplating this, YHC finally was able to cope with this by concluding that some other song had had an overlapping sound, riff, chord progression, etc.
This formed the basis of YHC finding other song pairs that have been accused (“by at least one reddit user”) of “stealing” another song. YHC would play a song that was either the victim or the thief, and the Pax’s job was to name four things: victim song, victim artist, thief song, thief artist.
During the playing of the first song, Pax had to AMRAP a set of three exercises
–Exercise 1: 10 Coupon exercise (Thruster, curls, OHP, Goblet squat, etc. which would change for every song)
–Exercise 2: 10 2:1 Imperial Walker
–Exercise 3: 10 Squat
Towards the end, YHC asked the collective PAX for the 4 answers. When the second song begins, each correct answer would convert 1/4 of an out-and-back bear crawl across the field to a run. For example, get all 4 right, and it was just an out-and-back run across the field.
Despite the bear crawling and running, nothing could stop Paradox from convincing us that he “invented” Shazam first, except that he didn’t try to actually make it, he just thought of the idea.
Then during the second song, Pax did some ab exercise that YHC called.
Rinse and repeat for the next song pair.
Here were the song pairs. Interestingly, in Spotify if you search for some of these, the other song appears pretty close to the top for many of these pairs.
A1) Victim: The Air That I Breathe by the Hollies
A2) Thief: Creep by Radiohead
The Pax picked up the Radiohead vibe immediately. 3/4 bear crawl. Ab work was the one hundred.
B1) Thief: Peach Fuzz by Caamp
B2) Victim: Brimful of Asher by Cornershop
Pax got everything except the name of the Thief song. YHC never picked up on the first line of the Thief song being “I was in the corner”, a potential nod to the victim song? Ab work was boat-canoe, aka double leg stretch.
C1) Thief: Last Nite by the Strokes
C2) Victim: American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Good chance for YHC to sneak in some Tom Petty with Goose being out of town. Pax got all four of these pretty easily. Ab work was single leg stretch (like one side boat, one side canoe, then switch)
D1) Victim: Eighties by Killing Joke
D2) Thief: Come as you are by Nirvana
Pax picked up the “Come as you are” sound pretty easily. The victim song was not too well known. If only there were an app for that. Ab work was leg lifts.
E1) Victim: If I could fly by Joe Satriani
E2) Thief: Viva La Vida by Coldplay
Honestly, YHC forgets what happened here. Possibly 0/4 or 1/4. But either way the Pax were close to identifying the thief. Ab work was Freddy Mercuries
F1) He’s so fine by the Chiffons
F2) My Sweet Lord by George Harrison
AB was all over this in one note. So we just had to run. Ab work just became Mary for the last couple of minutes then COT. Paradox prayed us out.
